The weekend snowstorm is being blamed for six deaths on Long Island.
Suffolk officials say a man in his 90s died after suffering an apparent heart attack while using a snowblower in Smithtown.
Also in Suffolk, a 75-year-old Huntington Station woman died after she had trouble breathing while shoveling snow at her home.
In Nassau, a 61-year-old man went into cardiac arrest and died while clearing snow in West Hempstead. In addition, a man was shoveling in Locust Valley and went into cardiac arrest and died.
A 66-year-old man was also struck by a private snowplow in front of his Oyster Bay Cove home Sunday afternoon. He was pronounced dead. The plow driver was not charged.
Doctors say that elderly residents and those with health conditions should not attempt to move heavy snow. For people who are healthy enough to shovel and clear the snow, it's important to take frequent breaks, use small shovels to avoid heavy loads, and lift shovels properly with the knees.
For those using snowblowers, remember to never put your hands into the machinery to clear clogged snow. Moving snow with a heavy snowblower can also cause serious over-exertion, so it's still important to take it slow and take breaks often.
Three more storm-related deaths were reported in New York City, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.
