A Shirley convenience store owner decided to fight back against a would-be robber.
Mohammed Sohail says a masked man wielding a bat entered his store on May 21 and demanded money. Instead of complying, Sohail says he grabbed his rifle. ?He started crying? says Sohail. ?And said ?I?m sorry for this. I made a mistake. Don?t shoot me, don?t call [the] police.??
Surveillance video shows the suspect dropping his bat and pleading for forgiveness.
Sohail says the man apologized and told him that he had no money or job and that his family was hungry. The store owner says he felt bad for the man and gave him $40 and bread for his family.
After viewing the surveillance footage from the convenience store, Rosa D'Anna from the Lighthouse Mission described the incident as both sad and inspirational. ?He was able to look beyond being threatened and wanted to help his fellow man -- I think that's awesome. ?
The Mission runs seven different street outreach programs every week in Suffolk County; its goal is to hand out food to anyone who needs it.
Sohail says he does not plan on pressing charges against the man.
