Stony Brook University is taking a high-tech approach to keeping its staff safe despite a shortage of protective equipment.

The university is using a 3D printer from the iCREATE lab to print medically compliant face shields.

Lab officials say the 3D printer prints the framework for the face shield and the rest of the materials are from a hardware store, office supply store and fabric store.

The masks will be given to health care workers at Stony Brook, including those at drive-through testing sites.

The iCREATE lab team says it can print 40 masks a day.

They are hoping to increase production to 100 a day.
