State education officials announced plans Thursday to cut 23 teaching jobs from Roosevelt Union Free School District's three elementary schools.
Terminating the full and part-time positions would free up $1.6 million, state representatives said. Officials said the district, which is under state control, overspent $3 million this year. According to education officials, Roosevelt schools face a $9.5 million deficit over the next three years.
Parents expressed concern about overcrowding, despite state estimates of 20 students per classroom. That figure is below the Nassau County average. With taxes set to increase again this year, some parents said the state should keep the teachers and focus more on improving the quality of education.
Frank Scott, of the Roosevelt Watch Society, said the cuts should have been made at the middle and high school levels. According to Scott, larger class sizes are less of an issue when it comes to older students.
Residents will vote on a proposed $63.7 million budget Tuesday.
