State officials issued a warning Thursday claiming both Long Island and New York City could run out of power by 2011.
The New York Independent System Operator released its Power Trends 2007 report in which it claims there might not be enough power in downstate New York's future.
LIPA CEO Richard Kessel, meanwhile, contends the study doesn't account for projects that will soon increase energy output.
With the installation of the Neptune cable in new power plants and the cross-Sound cable plan, Long Island should be in better shape than any other region in New York, Kessel said. Energy supply would also increase with the opening of the Caithness plant, which Kessel hopes will be operational in a couple years.
Larger LIPA clients, like Nassau University Medical Center, could take actions to reduce the burden on LIPA grids. NUMC said it's considering building its own plant or installing solar panels.
LIPA representatives also declared Thursday the utility is fully prepared for hurricane season.
