Police say a man was charged with driving while impaired after rear-ending a parked state police cruiser with an officer inside.
The New York state trooper was rear-ended while parked on the side of the Wantagh Parkway Thursday morning. The incident shut down the southbound lanes for more than two hours near Exit W-2.
State police arrested Gerald Breitfeller, 45, and charged him with driving while ability impaired combined drugs/alcohol, operation motor vehicle impaired by drugs, assault, and reckless endangerment.
State police say the trooper is going to be OK. He was seated inside the patrol car when a Chevy Blazer crashed into his cruiser. At the time, the trooper was working with state Department of Transportation roadside crews.
The officer was identified as Joseph Potucek, a 12-year veteran of the state police.
The driver of there Chevy Blazer was also not seriously injured. Two other vehicles appear to have been involved in the crash.
