State Education Department: Districts must stop using mascots depicting native Americans or lose funding

The state Education Department is telling districts to stop using mascots, team names and imagery depicting Native Americans.
Officials say districts that don't make the changes by the end of the school year risk losing state aid.
As News 12 has reported, a change.org petition was put forth last year calling on the East Islip district to retire its mascot name. The image of the mascot was removed from a mural, but the words on the mural are still there.
