A plan to widen a busy stretch of road in downtown Smithtown has been scrapped by the state Department of Transportation.

The $42 million plan included widening Route 25, which stretches from Route 347 to Route 111, from three to five lanes. Many local residents say that bumper-to-bumper traffic during each afternoon is frustrating.

The DOT spent $500,000 to narrow the road that passes through Main Street in Smithtown after six pedestrians were killed.

A DOT official said they are considering a scaled down plan that would include more turning lanes to ease traffic. There was no word on when any action may be taken.
