The state comptroller has reviewed the Metropolitan Transit Authority?s security plans and feels the MTA is dragging its feet when it comes to safety.
Comptroller Alan Hevesi says the MTA has hired more cops, increased training and added new layers of security, but found that the majority of safety projects were running massively behind schedule. Hevesi says these projects cost hundreds of millions of dollars and the MTA has a lot of room for improvement.
MTA board member Mitch Pally says the concern is understood, but says implementing new security to an old system while it?s running is very challenging. He says passenger safety is still the MTA?s top priority.
