Three workers from a Uniondale nursing home were arrested Wednesday following allegations of neglect that led to the death of a patient.
The state attorney general says two nurses and a nurse's aide at A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility in Uniondale neglected an 81-year-old who was on a ventilator.
Prosecutors claim Martine Moreland, 41, of Freeport; Sijimole Reji, 42, of Smithtown; and Annieamma Augustine, 57, of West Hempstead, ignored ventilator alarms, leading to the patient's death in 2015.
The unidentified victim died after authorities say the alarms went ignored for more than 9 minutes. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says the patient relied on the ventilator, but it became disconnected, raising the alarm. When such an alarm sounds, workers are required by law to respond.
Experts say there is a condition called "alarm fatigue" that sometimes causes nurses and other health care professionals to miss the sound of alarms.
"When we go into a hospital, a rehab, or especially a nursing home, we are our most vulnerable," says Ilene Corina, of Pulse of New York. "Health care professionals don't always hear the alarms, don't react to alarms."
A. Holly Patterson is a county-run facility, and Nassau Legislator Carrie Solages, of Elmont, says the charges are serious enough to warrant increased oversight there.
A spokesperson for the facility declined to comment, citing the active investigation. No one answered the door at Moreland's home, although a woman appeared in the window and turned off the lights a few moments later.
