The town of Southold has changed its zoning code to allow more accessory apartments to be built.
The amendment allows the apartments to be built in any single-family unit or detached structure. Previously, the apartments were only allowed to be built in presently existing structures, including garages and barns.
East End realtors believe this could lead to an economic boom for the area.
There are some conditions that still need to be met. The apartment can only have at most two bedrooms and one bathroom and cannot exceed 750 square feet. The lease also needs to be for year-round living.
