Approximately a month after the Southampton mayor decided to create a day laborer hiring site in the village, some residents headed to court Monday to stop the site from being created.
According to the mayor, the piece of land near the 7-Eleven on Montauk Highway has been an informal hiring site for day laborers. He says the Village of Southampton is trying to ease the congestion and tension by making the site a formal place for contractors to pick up day laborers.
Those who live near the site are now suing. They claim the town and the village, which acquired the property as open space preservation, have no right to use the property for a central hiring area.
According to attorney Anton Borovina, ?The town and the village have an obligation to administer and manage this land as a park.?
Meanwhile, a judge issued a restraining order against the hiring site last week. A hearing has now been set for May 8.
