The Southampton school district is considering extending the school day by two hours through a state grant.
State Assembly Education Committee member Fred Thiele says the only school on Long Island offered the grant was Southampton. Thiele says the $2.6 million program is being offered because of Southampton's test scores and ethnic diversity.
While the district hasn't made a final decision, superintendent Dr. Scott Farina emailed News 12 Long Island, saying, "A longer instructional day would provide students the opportunity for extra, individualized academic attention."
Some parents have started a petition drive to stop the move.
The district says it plans to hold more meetings on the topic and that it won't make a final decision until next year.
