Village of Southampton Mayor Mark Epley announced Friday the creation of a designated hiring site for day laborers.
Epley said minimal effort is needed to turn an empty lot across from the 7-Eleven and McDonald's on North Sea Road and Aldrich Lane into a place day laborers can safely solicit work. He said no new structures or buildings will be constructed. Bushes will be planted to border the area and Epley said a new gravel inlet will allow vehicles to safely pull off the road and hire workers. Epley is also asking individuals and companies to donate the bushes and gravel. This, he said, means the project wouldn't cost taxpayers a dime.
Epley is also writing a new ordinance that would make it illegal to solicit work in commercial parking lots and public roadways, which would essentially force day laborers to the official hiring venue.
