Southampton police officer Peter Jurgensen was told during his training he may one day have to deliver a baby, but he never expected it would be his own son.
Jurgensen and his wife Kristen were on their way to Southampton Hospital Wednesday morning, expecting to have their child delivered in the comfort of a hospital room. The baby couldn?t wait.
?She goes ?the baby's coming? and I said ?calm down take some breaths, we're almost at the hospital, you'll be fine,?? Peter Jurgensen says. ?She said ?no, the baby's coming ? the head is coming out.??
The father-to-be pulled over at a gas station, called 911 and delivered his son Ethan at around 5 a.m. with the help of the dispatcher. Jurgensen realized the work wasn?t over yet though - the umbilical cord was wrapped around Ethan?s neck twice and he was choking. He successfully unwrapped it, and the baby?s breathing returned to normal.
?I'm so proud,? says Kristen Jurgensen. ?I always knew he was a good police officer. I've never seen him in action and after today he's not only the doctor of the baby on the birth certificate, but he's a hero. He saved his son.?
The Jurgensens say they?ll have a great story to tell Ethan when he?s older.
