South Shore residents who found safety at a Best Western hotel in Massapequa Park in the weeks and months following Superstorm Sandy rekindled their special bond at a reunion Tuesday evening.

The hotel was a home away from home for 40 South Shore residents who were displaced by the storm. It even won an award from the Best Western chain for its hospitality toward Sandy victims.

"They were wonderful," said Barbara Rooney, of Wantagh, who spent eight weeks at the Best Western. "We felt like we were home."

Many of those who stayed at the Massapequa Park hotel during the storm kept in touch with each other to provide support through the rebuilding process.
