Sources tell News 12 Long Island that a pocketbook that may be linked to Shannan Gilbert was found today as police searched the Oak Beach area near where the missing New Jersey woman was last seen.Law enforcement officials stressed at a news conference, however, that no human remains were found during the search. They also refused to officially confirm or deny that any potential clues were found today.
Inspector Stuart Cameron, of the Suffolk County K-9 Unit, said due to the unseasonably warm temperatures and low tide, they decided to once again scour the marshy area near the gated community of Oak Beach where Gilbert was spotted before her disappearance. He would not say whether any other evidence was discovered.
Cameron insists today's search was not the result of a new tip, but an extension of yesterday's massive search that involved Nassau, Suffolk and state police officers who examined 90 points of interest picked up by FBI photography. Police said no new evidence was found during the search.
Gilbert's disappearance led to the discovery of 10 sets of human remains near Gilgo Beach in Babylon.
Authorities say the search is set to resume tomorrow at 8 a.m. Police are also guarding the Oak Beach area overnight and are checking for proof of residency before admitting people into the gated community.
