Sources: Baby may have been accidentally suffocated in bed
A 7-week-old baby girl who was sleeping in bed with her parents was found dead Tuesday morning.
Police responded to the home on Cornell Street around 6 a.m.
Family members told News 12 Long Island that the baby slept in the same bed as her parents every night, including Monday night. Sources also say police are investigating if the baby was accidentally suffocated while in the bed.
The death has been ruled as an accident at this point. No charges have been filed.
Advocates of co-sleeping say parents and babies often get more sleep if it occurs in the same bed. They also say it makes breastfeeding during the night easier. Dr. Harriet Boxer, the director of neonatal intensive care at Nassau University Medical Center, disagrees – saying that she sees absolutely no benefit from sleeping in the same bed as a baby.
"I see it as dangerous," she tells News 12 Long Island.
