A new federal report suggests black and Hispanic drivers, including those on Long Island, are more likely to be arrested after they are stopped by police. The U.S. Department of Justice report found that blacks, Hispanics and whites are pulled over about the same across the nation. However, the study also found that whites are searched only 3.6 percent of the time compared to 9.5 percent for blacks and 8.8 percent for Hispanics. Minorities are also almost twice as likely to be arrested compared to whites, according to the study.
"Every time I go out at night I get pulled over. Like most of the time, not every time ... [It's] racism," Joyfi Lopez, of Oceanside, argues.
Another driver agrees that there is a problem. "As a person, it makes you feel bad because we're all supposed to be equal," he said.
