Long Island health inspectors are reporting some serious safety violations at summer camps in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Although the number of critical violations is down from 2004, several camps still failed to make the grade. Officials say one of the worst offenders is the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Center Day Camp in Rockville Centre, with most violations regarding inadequate staffing at a pool. State law requires lifeguards to count all swimmers every 15 minutes, which is known as a "buddy check." Health inspectors waited 38 minutes to see one during a visit last summer.
Though no injuries were reported at the camp last year, Village of Rockville Centre officials said in a statement that the program has a new director, additional management and extra training to avoid such issues this year.
