Three soldiers were trekking across a stretch of Long Island Saturday to raise awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder and veteran suicide.
A study by the Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that 22 veterans commit suicide each day. The three were walking a 22-mile stretch to symbolize those lives.
The three Airborne Tri-Team members left Calverton National Cemetery around 12 a.m., carrying 45 pounds on their backs.
They were headed to Sayville, and upon their arrival at Gillette Park they were set to take part in the Airborne 5K run.
