The wintry mix Monday made for a messy evening commute, according to officials, and many people left work early to avoid the worst of it.
At the Huntington Town Yard in Commack, road crews rolled out in a fleet of trucks to salt and sand the roads as plows got in position.
Huntington officials say the town's goal was to salt the roads early to prevent them from freezing before overnight rainfall.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory in both counties until midnight.
Forecasts predict the rain will stick around through Tuesday and may cause flooding on the South Shore.
