A small plane made a forced landing in Hauppauge Saturday afternoon with the help of a parachute, officials say.
The aircraft landed off Marcus Boulevard inside the Hauppauge Industrial Park. The pilot, identified as Louis Obergh, and his daughter suffered minor injuries.
Video from the scene showed a parachute trailing out of the plane, which landed not far from a building.
According to News 12 Meteorologist Bill Korbel, who is also a licensed pilot, the Cirrus SR22 is the only production plane with a large parachute that can be deployed in case of trouble.
"The parachute connected to this plane essentially saved these two lives," said Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini.
Obergh said he was on his way to Republic Airport after visiting the University of Rhode Island with his daughter.
"The engine died and I pulled the parachute and we landed," he said.
Suffolk police say the FAA and the NTSB are investigating the crash.
