A deli in the heart of Islip is doing more than just serving sandwiches, it’s dishing out history with every order. Once known as Nill’s Store, the beloved local spot opened its doors in 1912 and has been a cornerstone of the community ever since.
“It touches my heart, it really does,” said Kathleen Nill Sutter, whose grandparents first opened the store more than a century ago.
The smell of German specialties like sauerbraten and strudel once filled the neighborhood air, as Nill’s Store became known for its authentic home cooking.
“My grandmother was such a great cook,” Kathleen remembered.
Fast-forward nearly 120 years, and the deli is still serving the Islip community now under the stewardship of new owner John Boccone.
Despite the changes, Boccone is keeping the heart of the deli alive, while bringing in fresh energy and a new menu.
“It just has so much history,” Boccone said. “It’s a really nice, family-oriented community.”
The locals agree.
For Kathleen, her grandfather’s deli remains a special place. It’s not just a business it’s a living tribute to the family and the town that helped shape it.
“I love the new owner, John,” she said. “He is just like my grandfather, and I couldn’t ask for more than that.”
