Skaters have started an online petition to try and stop part of a Riverhead skate park from becoming a pickleball court.
The skate park is closed and has been undergoing renovations for more than a year.
Officials now say they are going to turn part of the park into a pickleball court for senior citizens.
Skater Kyle Schwarz, of Cutchogue, started an online petition that aims to restore the full skate park. He says the petition currently has about 2,000 names on it.
Riverhead Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ray Coyne says the town had already spent $50,000 to fix the skate park and needed thousands more to get the job done.
At the same time, pickleball - a sport that combines elements of ping pong, racquetball and tennis - started to become popular in Riverhead.
Coyne says they plan to open the smaller skate park within a week and the pickleball court in mid-September.
