A new skate park in Hempstead was dedicated Saturday to the memory of a town employee who died in a tragic accident.
Jarred Newallo was a sanitation worker in Hempstead who was killed in a sanitation truck crash in 2014.
The Village of Hempstead unveiled the skate park at Kennedy Memorial Park in Newallo’s honor. He was an avid skater and always wanted a park in Hempstead.
Superintendent of Parks George Sandas said Newallo would come into his office once a week to ask for a skate park.
“We know he's up there looking at us and he's really happy about this,” he said.
Newallo’s family says seeing all of the kids use the skate park made it an overwhelmingly happy day.
“It's something that he would have loved to see and I wish he was here to see it,” said his mom Tara Newallo.
The Newallo family says a local artist will be painting portions of the skate park for the kids in the next few weeks.
