Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini has declared victory in the race for Suffolk County district attorney.
The race between Sini and former assistant district attorney Ray Perini was one of the most high-profile contests in the county, especially after the corruption arrest of current Suffolk DA Tom Spota.
Spota was charged with helping cover up former Police Chief James Burke's beating of a handcuffed burglary suspect.
Sini highlighted successes by Suffolk police against gangs, specifically MS-13, in his campaign. He said 300 MS-13 gang members were arrested in the last year.
Meanwhile, Errol Toulon Jr., the Democratic candidate for Suffolk County sheriff, is still locked in a race with Republican candidate Larry Zacarese.
Just 1,300 votes separate the two candidates with thousands of absentee ballots yet to be counted.
Editor's Note: An earlier version of this article stated that Errol Toulon won the Suffolk sheriff's race.  This article has been modified after comments from the Suffolk GOP stating they are going to count absentee ballots.
