A politically connected Nassau restaurant owner facing federal charges was re-arrested Thursday on a new wire fraud charge.
Harendra Singh, 56, was originally arrested in September on 13 charges, including allegedly bribing a former Town of Oyster Bay official. The judge decided to revoke his bail and send him back to jail, calling him an "economic danger to the community."
Singh's latest arrest comes after federal officials say he violated his bail agreement by submitting a false loan application to a lender in California.
Prosecutors say he presented the lender with a $148,000 invoice for equipment to be installed in his Bethpage restaurant. They say the invoice was fake and the equipment did not exist.
Singh's attorney Anthony LaPinta insists his client did not commit a crime.
"I don't think there was a fraud committed or an attempt to commit fraud. What was submitted was a preliminary request for loan consideration and an estimate of costs, and our position is that conduct did not amount to conduct that violated his bail conditions," says LaPinta.
Singh will remain in jail until his trial, which could be next year.
