Members of the Sikh community asked town officials why a "stop work" order was placed on their new $3 million temple under construction on Old Country Road in Plainview.
About 30 members from the Guru Gobind Sikh Center took up the first few rows of seats during Tuesday morning's Town Board meeting.
Town Supervisor John Venditto explained that board members were reviewing the project after residents who live directly behind the temple site voiced their concerns.
"There is a sense in the community that this project may be too big," Venditto explained. "There are concerns about traffic and there are concerns about parking."
Nearby residents also said they didn't want the temple to devalue their homes.
Supervisor Venditto asked temple members to have patience with the process while their site plans are reviewed.
"I'm sure they'll work with us and we'll be open very soon," said Pritpal Singh. "Any issues that are out there, we want to get them resolved. We just want to be able to go back there again."
The Sikh Temple has been located on the site for 30 years in a smaller building.
