Residents of several Fire Island communities were told Monday they could resume using tap water.
Suffolk's water authority says it re-tested the wells and the water is clean. Since Saturday, the ground water on parts of Fire Island had been banned because E. coli bacteria was found in the water supply. Thousands of people were told to boil their tap water or use bottled water during the three-day warning. Water officials say they don't think the wells were ever actually contaminated. They believe the initial testing was flawed. Related Information
