Eleven elected officials were arrested Thursday afternoon at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan following a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to state Sen. Julia Salazar's office.
The 11 officials were among more than 75 arrested by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and NYPD.
Salazar's office says New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, State Sens. Gustavo Rivera, Jabari Brisport, Salazar herself and Assembly Members Robert Carroll, Emily Gallagher, Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, Marcela Mitaynes, Claire Valdez, Tony Simone and Steven Raga were arrested.
Salazar's office said that "ICE officials denied entry to the group after attempting to conduct oversight of the 10th floor to ensure compliance with the latest preliminary injunction ruling."
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams was among 66 New Yorkers, faith leaders, doctors and other elected officials who were arrested outside Federal Plaza.
The protest comes a day after "courts ruled that the 10th floor must significantly improve conditions for people detained by ICE at 26 Federal Plaza."
An earlier post on social media platform X by Rivera says he and other officials were at Federal Plaza "to demand access to the 10th floor, where people are being detained & block ICE vans from leaving. We refuse to stand by while ICE abducts our neighbors. Neither should our leaders."
