The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office says Carlos Lauro was arrested and charged with 12 counts of animal cruelty.

Sources tell News 12 that Lauro is the same man who was convicted of fatally shooting two dogs. He was sentenced to a year in jail in that case.

Lauro was also banned from owning an animal for 20 years.

Humane Long Island tells News 12 that they took in over 50 chickens and roosters following the latest investigation into Lauro.

"It was disgusting. We saw bones littered on the property. We saw corpses of animals in with live animals. The conditions were absolutely filthy," John Di Leonardo, the executive director of Humane Long Island.

The organization is nursing the animals back to health.

"We're treating them for staph infections, upper respiratory infections and frostbite. Several of them even had mutilated beaks," Di Leonardo said. "The ends of their beaks were completely cut off."

The organization says it will be taking care of the rescued birds until they can find permanent homes for them on a vegan farm.
