Students in Sachem have raised money to help the family of a soldier who was shot and killed at Fort Hood in Texas over Labor Day weekend.

Seqouya Middle School students held a walkathon and raised $2,000 for the family of Sgt. Ryan Dickinson. Dickinson's wife Heather says she is grateful that the community has come together to support her and her children as they venture into the next chapter of their lives.

Dickinson's wife also said that she is blown away by the lengths that people went to with the objective of helping someone they don't know.

The Dickinson family originally lived in Texas, but is now relocating to Long Island. The children will attend Sequoya Middle School.
