Some seniors at a Hempstead apartment complex say they fear for their safety every day after schools let out.
Seniors at the New Greenwich Gardens apartments say kids from a nearby Hempstead middle school cut through their complex before and after school. They say the students are rowdy and disrespectful.
Resident Dolores Watson says fighting also occurs between students and those trying to stop them from trespassing. Another resident, Beatrice Mason, says one group of students nearly knocked her down one day.
"When I braced myself, I turned around ? I thought they would say ?I?m sorry? or ?excuse me,?" Mason says. Instead, Mason claims they called her a derogatory name.
Hempstead Police Chief Joseph Wing says there are extra officers in the area every day around dismissal. However, the senior residents still say not enough is being done to protect them and their complex.
