Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Thursday a new push to combat anti-Asian American hate crimes across the country and on Long Island.
From Atlanta to New York City, attacks against Asian Americans have been on the rise since the pandemic began.
Gordon Zhang, of the Long Island Chinese American Association, is one of many residents demanding an end to the hate and attacks on Asian Americans.
"People are wondering how much more blood we must shed," he says. "In the past few months, it seems to be getting worse much worse."
Sen. Schumer gathered with Long Island's Asian community leaders in Mineola on Thursday to announce that he will be fast tracking the “COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act" in the Senate.
The legislation would designate a specific person at the Department of Justice to expedite the review and prosecution of COVID-19-related hate crimes. In addition, it would increase communication with federal, state and local law enforcement to track those crimes.
Sen. Schumer says a website will be created to allow reporting of attacks.
"So, if someone wants to report in a crime online, they will be able to do it and we'll have a record of all of these crimes," Sen. Schumer says.
Dr. Isma Chaudrhy, of the Islamic Center of Long Island, says there are so many in the community that are afraid of the rising tide of hate. She hopes this bill will put a stop to these crimes.
"We cannot allow this to go on today and every day we have to stand together to denounce all forms of micro and macro aggressions and hate," she says.
Sen. Schumer says he'll bring the bill to the floor of the Senate a week from Monday.
