Recess is about to be a lot more fun for some students in Selden!
Alyssa Hughes, a first-grade teacher at New Lane Memorial Elementary School, just won the ‘Tanger Kids Grant.’
Hughes decided to use the grant to buy toys and games for the kids to enjoy altogether.
She says she made that choice because the playground isn't big enough for all her students.
"It's very important for recess, because the kids need a break from the day, and running around in the outdoors really helps them come back with a reset mind, ready to learn in the afternoon,” Hughes says.
Tanger awards these grants every school year.
Any teacher on Long Island can apply.
