Young students in Selden welcomed the new year with smiles on their faces as Stagecoach Road Elementary School reopened several months after a fire.
No arrests have been made in the suspected arson of last summer, but students and faculty focused on the excitement of returning to their place of learning Tuesday. Smoke and water damage, as well as the collapse of part of the roof, caused administrators to disperse the 500 students among five other schools. With a new roof, classrooms and computers, the Selden school is ready to once again be a place of learning.
Residents and local businesses contributed to the restoration effort by donating funds for new equipment, administrators say. Many students went door to door to collect money, hoping to shorten their stay away from Stagecoach Road Elementary School.
