Suffolk police arrested several Selden graffiti artists Tuesday who bragged a little too publicly about their work.
The anti-gang unit charged nine adolescents, ages 11 to 16, with criminal mischief. With more than 25 buildings and fences defaced with spray paint, the damage to some was so extensive that police issued felony charges. According to detectives, the kids boasted of their work on the Web site MySpace.com, which led to major breakthroughs in the few-month investigation.
Cops say many of the vandals believe their graffiti is art, and fail to recognize the criminal aspect of their activity. Police claim there are at least two rival groups, who paint over the other's work. They add the competition does lead to fighting sometimes.
