A swimmer went missing off the coast of Seaside Park Friday evening, prompting a large emergency search, according to the United States Coast Guard.

The USCG says that at approximately 5:30 p.m., the agency received a call about a 23-year-old male who went under the water and did not resurface.

This occurred about 100 yards off Seaside Heights between O Street and Decatur Avenue, according to a military spokesperson.

The Coast Guard said Seaside Fire & Rescue, the agency leading the coordinated search, deployed boats and swimmers.

Local law enforcement sources confirm the search for the Palmyra man is a recovery mission. Police said the person's family has been notified. There were no sightings of the lost swimmer, and the search was suspended around 8:30 p.m.

It is expected to resume Saturday morning.
