The principal of Wyandanch High School says a new uniform policy has changed more than just the way the students look.
More students have made the honor roll than ever before since the optional uniforms were introduced in September.
"There's less focus on what everyone is wearing and we can all focus on our grades more," says Cornell Robinson, a senior at the school.
Students also say they get to school on time because they spend less time at home figuring out what to wear. The uniforms showcase the school's colors and are embroidered with the school insignia.
Educators say the improvements are critical for the district, which has among the lowest graduation rates on Long Island.
"How you dress is how you act. You create a certain character, which builds self-esteem," says Principal Paul Sibblies.
The funding for the uniforms was donated. The school is hoping to raise more funds so that each of its 675 students can have one.
