A second-grader wearing a T-shirt that read ?N the N-Word? was asked to remove the piece of clothing after Amityville Elementary School officials informed her it was inappropriate.
Jaiden Haber, 8, says she doesn?t even know what the N word means, just that she shouldn?t say it.
The incident has generated some controversy. Dr. John Williams, Amityville schools superintendent, says a shirt even referencing the N word can be disruptive, regardless of intention.
?It's inflammatory, any reference to it, it's just a lightning rod and we just felt it's not appropriate to be worn in school,? says Williams.
News 12 Long Island got mixed responses from parents of the school?s students. Some felt the shirt had no place at the institution, while other?s thought its positive message outweighed its disruptive qualities.
The girl?s mother says the school missed an opportunity to teach the students a lesson in tolerance.
