School officials may ban students in Smithtown from attending their proms if parents don?t attend a meeting about the rising heroin problem at the school.
The school district is requiring parents of seniors to attend Wednesday?s meeting. If a student's parents do not attend, school officials say that student won?t be allowed to buy a prom ticket.
Many students and parents tell News 12 Long Island that they know there is a drug problem at the school but think it?s unfair to punish students who have no part in it.
Officials say the meeting will be videotaped for parents who are unable to attend. Parents can order a copy of the tape and watch it so their kids can go to prom. They also say there will be additional meetings down the road.
