School districts are on edge as to when they should send a student home for displaying possible symptoms of COVID-19.
Sniffling, sneezing and coughing are possible symptoms of coronavirus, but are also symptoms of other medical issues like the common cold, seasonal allergies and the flu.
Nassau Health Commissioner Dr. Larry Eisenstein says most districts are erring on the side of caution, but that most do have some discretion.
Some districts, like Syosset, sent out paperwork indicating that per the New York state Health Department, students would need both written documentation and a negative COVID-19 test before being allowed back in school.
Eisenstein says the department lets students return to school with a negative test or a doctor's note with another explanation.
News 12 reached out to state officials about if and when guidance for schools would be updated.
In the meantime, rules for returning to school may differ from district to district.
