A ball on the bay to help restore our waters.
The Mansion at Timber Point hosted the first Save the Great South Bay Oyster Ball.
Organizers say water quality in the bay has deteriorated, and they are vowing to restore it.
Money raised during the event goes toward restoring oyster populations and keeping creeks free flowing.
So far, the organization has planted 250,000 oysters in the bay. The organization says it's just getting started.
“One single oyster can filter 50 gallons of water a day,” says Rhianna Quinn Roddy, of the Save the Great South Bay's Board of Directors. “We have four sanctuaries, and these are oysters that are not for consumption, they are simply there for filtration. So the oyster project is very big for us, and we hope to plant a billion oysters in our bay.”
News 12’s Antoinette Biordi served as the master of ceremonies. The ball was sponsored by News 12.
