Some Superstorm Sandy victims are telling News 12 Long Island that they were scammed out of thousands of dollars by a Smithtown-based contractor.
The Polizzi family in East Rockaway says they are one of dozens of families that were scammed by Lee Moser, the owner of Capstone Remodeling.
Andrew Polizzi says Capstone was not able to pay subcontractors they hired and performed shoddy workmanship.
Polizzi says he made several payments per the contract totaling $85,000, but stopped paying when things began going downhill.
"Eventually...they came and boarded up my house and left me and my family homeless," says Polizzi.
Christine Polizzi says the same company pulled a similar scam with her mother's home. She says they took $27,000 from her mom and did no work.
The Polizzis filed a complaint and found out others did, too. Capstone's license was suspended last year in both Nassau and Suffolk. The company is on Suffolk Consumer Affairs' Wall of Shame, and the Nassau District Attorney's Office is investigating the allegations.
Capstone Remodeling did not answer their door or the phone when contacted by News 12.
