A sergeant in the Sands Point Police Department has become the first Long Island police officer to die from COVID-19.
Officials say Joseph Spinosa, 52, passed away on Wednesday.
Spinosa tested positive for the virus two weeks ago.
It's unclear how Spinosa contracted the coronavirus, but his death will be counted as a line-of-duty death.
The department says details about funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
Spinosa would have celebrated 20 years with the department this September.
