Runners pound pavement in annual LI Marathon
Thousands of runners took part in the pavement-pounding fun for the Long Island Marathon in Nassau County today.
Old Brookville native Will Schefer, 23, finished in first place for the men's title with a time of 2 hours and 31 minutes. It was the personal trainer's first marathon.
Tara Farrell from East Quogue was the first woman to finish the race. It was her sixth Long Island Marathon.
Runners from across the country started the race at Charles Lindberg Boulevard in Uniondale this morning and finished at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
The half-marathon and 10K races were also held today. Officials say about 8,000 runners registered for the events.
Security was stepped up with both uniformed and plainclothes officers stationed along the race route. There were also bomb-sniffing K-9 units, as well as a clear-bag-only policy.
