(11/14/06) ROSLYN - As workers replace the Roslyn Viaduct, residents and lawmakers worry about the side effects of the large construction project.
Placed at the junction of Northern Boulevard and Hempstead Harbor, the Roslyn Viaduct was built in 1949. Beginning Wednesday, construction workers will close all but three lanes on the road. During morning rush hour two lanes will be open westbound and for the evening rush two lanes will be available on the eastbound route. Residents say they are very anxious about increased traffic.
The viaduct's replacement has created safety concerns as well. Due to the shallow water level, a barge is unable to carry most of the material to the workers at the bridge. The mayor of Roslyn Harbor claims it is a safety hazard to have materials travel via truck, and the village will consider challenging the plan.
