A girl who claimed she was kidnapped in Roslyn Heights, prompting a large police response, recanted her story Tuesday.
Nassau County police say the 14-year-old admitted she made up the story about being kidnapped Monday shortly after authorities held a news conference. The girl claimed a man in a black BMW forced her into his car at Roslyn Road and Church Street. She said he tied her up and took her to Barr Beach in Port Washington.
The girl told police she managed to escape when the man pulled over to talk to someone.
Some Long Islanders are upset, saying the girl caused vital police resources to be diverted to a hoax. Authorities had released a sketch of the suspect and asked for the public's help.
