Roosevelt residents were hit with a double whammy Friday regarding their embattled public school system.
Superintendent Ronald Ross, who was appointed to the post three years ago by the New York State Department of Education, resigned despite having one year remaining on his contract.
Frank Scott, of the Roosevelt Watch Society, said he's thrilled about Ross' resignation. Scott and others in the society blame Ross for turning a $1 million budget surplus into a $12 million deficit.
A second dose of shocking news came with the school board's proposal for a 7 percent school tax increase for next year. Residents said that hike, on top of already demanding taxes, is absurd. A prior state comptroller's audit revealed the district is guilty of mass overspending, leading to additional criticism from residents over the proposal.
